Chalia has had a deep love for the kitchen for as long as she can remember. Growing up in humble beginnings, she was unable to obtain all the ingredients she saw in her mother’s cookbooks so she learned from reading. Chalia dreamt of the day she’d be able to create the dishes she saw in the pictures of those cookbooks. Fortunately, her uncle owned a bakery and she absorbed his baking techniques by watching him work. But her favorite times were the summer’s in Baja, California cooking with her wealthy aunt who had every ingredient you could imagine to create delicious dishes and cakes.
Back at home in Mexico, she put her learning to work selling slices of cakes to the hospital personnel where her mother worked. Her mother taught her the art of marketing which enabled Chalia to earn enough money to buy her own clothes—she would sell over a thousand of her homemade muffins a week to the neighbors. Chalia was only 12 yet she had the determination to chase her passions and reach her dream.
Chalia’s love for the kitchen has continued to flourish through the years. She has further developed and honed her craft by owning her own bakery, teaching several cooking and baking courses and working at several notable bakeries and restaurants within the Utah area, including Blue Lemon and Frida’s Bistro where she was the pastry chef. Her prime achievement was graduating from MATC’s Culinary Arts Program in 2011.
After the tragic loss of her 17-year-old daughter, Itzel, from cancer in March of 2013, Chalia was able to use her passion for cooking to help her overcome this tragedy. Itzel became her inspiration. A week before Itzel’s last treatment she asked Chalia, “Mom, what is your dream for your life after the treatments?” Chalia shared with her that she wanted to start her catering business but she didn’t know how she could do it with all the medical expenses they had incurred. The encouragement that she received from her daughter that day will always live on in her thoughts. Though Itzel isn’t physically with us anymore, Chalia stays inspired by that promise to fire her vigor. Since that day with Itzel she has been working on making her dream a reality. Her family is her ultimate inspiration and the reason she is able to do what she loves.
Blessed with humor, vitality and a charismatic personality, Chalia continues to touch the lives around her with her great talent, passion for food, and desire to share and serve.
